Help & FAQ
Wave Reader — RSS Feed Reader for iOS
Getting Started
How do I add a feed?
Tap the “+” icon in the Feeds tab. Enter an RSS or Atom feed URL and tap “Add”. Wave supports RSS autodiscovery – you can paste a website URL and the app will find the feed automatically.
Which feed formats are supported?
Wave supports RSS 2.0 and Atom feeds. Most blogs, news sites, and podcasts offer feeds in one of these formats.
How do I get started quickly?
During onboarding, Wave offers 120 curated feed recommendations organized by category (Technology, News, Science, etc.). You can subscribe to feeds with a single tap.
How do I import feeds from another RSS reader?
Go to Settings → Import/Export and select an OPML file. OPML is the standard format for RSS feed lists. Most readers (Feedly, Inoreader, NetNewsWire, etc.) can export your subscriptions as OPML.
How do I export my feeds?
Go to Settings → Import/Export and tap “Export”. This creates an OPML file that you can save or share with another RSS reader.
Reading
What is full article extraction?
Many RSS feeds only contain a summary or excerpt. Full article extraction downloads the complete article content so you can read it directly in Wave without opening a browser.
How do I enable automatic extraction for a feed?
Long-press a feed and select “Auto-extract full content” from the context menu. When enabled, all new articles from this feed will automatically have their full content extracted.
What is “Continue Reading”?
Wave remembers your scroll position in articles. If you leave an article before finishing it, it appears in the “Continue Reading” section at the top of the Home tab so you can pick up where you left off. Reading progress syncs across devices via iCloud.
What’s the difference between “Read Later” and “Favorites”?
- Read Later: A temporary queue for articles you want to read soon.
- Favorites: Permanent bookmarks. Saved articles stay in your collection until you remove them.
Both are accessible via the Saved tab (bookmark icon).
How do I customize the reader?
Go to Settings → Reader to adjust font size and reading preferences.
Organization
How do I create folders?
Tap the folder icon in the Feeds tab toolbar or go to Settings → Manage Folders. You can name the folder and assign it a color.
How do I move a feed to a folder?
You can drag and drop a feed onto a folder header in the Feeds tab. Alternatively, long-press a feed and select “Move to Folder” from the context menu.
Can I reorder my feeds?
Yes. Use drag and drop in the Feeds tab to rearrange your feeds. You can also reorder feeds in Settings → Manage Feeds.
How do I customize which feeds appear in the Home tab?
Each feed has a “Show in Home” toggle. Long-press a feed and turn it off to hide it from the Home tab while keeping it accessible in the Feeds tab.
Search
How does search work?
Tap the search icon in the Home tab. Wave searches article titles and content with live results as you type.
iCloud & Sync
Does my data sync across devices?
Yes. If your device is signed into iCloud, Wave automatically syncs your feeds, articles, folders, reading progress, and settings across all your devices via Apple CloudKit.
How do I back up my data?
Go to Settings → Account & iCloud. You can create manual backups and choose whether to store them in iCloud or locally on your device. Wave also creates automatic daily backups (the 7 most recent are kept).
How do I restore a backup?
Go to Settings → Account & iCloud, tap the backup section, and select a backup from the list to restore.
Can I use Wave without iCloud?
Yes. Wave works fully offline and locally. iCloud sync happens automatically when available but is not required.
Sign in with Apple
Do I need to sign in?
No. Sign in with Apple is optional and offered during onboarding. You can skip it and use Wave as a guest.
Background Refresh
Does Wave refresh feeds in the background?
Yes. Background refresh is enabled by default. Wave refreshes your feeds periodically even when the app isn’t open. You can toggle this in Settings → Home Tab.
Troubleshooting
A feed won’t load.
- Check that the feed URL is correct and accessible in a browser
- Make sure you have an internet connection
- Try removing and re-adding the feed
- Some feeds may be temporarily unavailable (server-side)
Articles appear truncated or incorrectly formatted.
Try enabling full article extraction for that feed. This loads the complete article directly from the website.
The unread badge isn’t showing.
Check Settings → Home Tab to make sure “Unread Badge” is enabled.
How do I delete a feed?
Swipe left on a feed in the Feeds tab, or go to Settings → Manage Feeds and use the delete option.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings → scroll down → Delete Account. This removes all local data.
Privacy & Data
Does Wave collect my data?
No. Wave is a local-first app. All data stays on your device (and in your private iCloud if sync is enabled). We do not collect analytics, tracking data, or personal information.
Is my reading history shared with anyone?
No. Your reading history, feed subscriptions, and all settings are stored exclusively on your device and in your private iCloud container. We have no access to this data.
What happens if I delete the app?
All locally stored data (feeds, articles, settings) is removed. iCloud data may remain in your iCloud account. Export your feeds as OPML before deleting the app if you want to keep your subscription list.
